Mario Lemieux Foundation

the Mario Lemieux Foundation

Mario Lemieux founded the Mario Lemieux Foundation in 1993 shortly after he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and has donated millions of dollars to various area institutions since that time. At the time he was probably having his greatest NHL season and was on pace to break and establish a new NHL scoring record. However he became ill and was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease.

Mario Lemieux Foundation LogoMario is now 12 years cancer free since his successful battle with the disease and his experience has led him to focus on different ways to help assist those whom are not as fortunate as he was. Mario devotes much of his time to the Foundation raising funds to help reach the ultimate goal: a cure for cancer. The Foundation has been successful with a long list of achievements including a few listed here below. Some Accomplishments include:

The main objective of the Mario Lemieux Foundation is to fund promising medical research projects being conducted by talented scientists. Among the donations made by the Foundation was a 5 million dollar gift to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to establish the Mario Lemieux Centers for Patient Care and Research in 2001 and a two million dollar gift to the Children’s Home of Pittsburgh in 2005. A $1 million gift just one year later established the position of Endowed Chair in Pediatric Oncology Research at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Another initiative, the Austin’s Playroom Project, was created following Mario and his wife Nathalie’s personal experience while caring for their premature son at Magee-Womens Hospital. In just eight years enough funds have been raised to complete 11 playrooms with another seven scheduled to open in the coming months. The Lemieux Family has experienced many personal challenges, but rather than leaving these experiences in the past, Mario and Nathalie have used them as a catalyst for public service, selflessly donating both time and money to help others.
