Mario Lemieux played professional ice hockey for 17 seasons seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL (betweeen 1984 and 2006)
and is now the Penguins principal owner and chairman, after having fighting to keep the team from bankruptcy in 1999. Lemieux is
regarded by most in the hockey community as one of the greatest players to ever play in the NHL. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy twice while
leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to winning two Stanley Cup championships, led the NHL in scoring six times (Art Ross trophy),
was named MVP three times (Hart Trophy) and scored 199 points during his best season
(Wayne Gretzky has been the only player to ever reach the 200 point mark in a single season)
despite missing many games due to illness and injury.
Lemieux along with other Canadian NHL stars like Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic helped led the Canadian men's team to win the gold medal
at the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Gold medal helped end a long drought and was the first Olympic gold hockey title for Canada
in over fifty years.
Lemieux created the Mario Lemieux Foundation, the same year he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. The main
objective of the Foundation is to fund promising medical research projects being conducted by scientists. Additionally, the
Foundation supports other organizations such as the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the McGowan
Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the Leukemia Society, the Lupus Foundation and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
The Mario-Lemieux.com site is interested in getting information and photos of Mario Lemieux from other fans
